Blown 1969 Camaro RS Z-28 setup for Pro Street

This fast, exciting ’69 Camaro is owned by Ron Greulich who did much of the buildup himself. He was inspired by all the blown cars and trucks he was seeing at the Car Craft Street Machine Nationals he was attending in the early ’80s.

Before this Pro Street Camaro project, Ron built 2 other Pro Street vehicles, a 1976 Camaro LT which he bought new, and a 1986 short-bed Chevy Silverado which had been his daily driver. After running those vehicles for awhile, he began looking for a 1969 Camaro like one he had sold some years earlier when he was raising money to build the ’76. He eventually found a Craiglist seller who had a ’69 setup for drag racing. Thinking he could save some construction time, Ron bought it.

As it usually turns out though, major work was needed to get it to where it needed to be. Even though the frame was “back-halved”, the wheel wells were too small for the 33 x 19.5 Mickey Thompson tires so major modifications were needed. The 9″ rear end had to be narrowed an additional 6 inches and the interior wheel wells were modified to fit. A Trac-loc differential with 4.56 gears and 31-spline Moser axles were used. Custom 36 inch ladder bars and QA1 coilover shocks were also added.

Inside, the drag race rollcage was replaced with an 8-point cage from Art Morrision. After completely rewiring the car, Ron added Auto meter Ultra Lite gauges, a Grant steering wheel and Procar Elite 1100 seats.

The engine Ron built with the help of Gary’s Machine in Tucson is an 8:1 compression 468 inch BBC. A complete rebuild was done including a hydraulic blower cam by Herbert (having 285/280 degrees duration at .050) and aluminum heads. Two 750 CFM Holley carbs sit on top of the 8-71 BDS blower. Headman 2 inch headers lead into Dynatech mufflers. The transmission is a Bob Metez assembled Turbo 400 with a Hughs 3000-stall converter.

Greulich did a number of clean up tasks on the exterior body. Then Rick Harris did the final straightening up of the body lines. Finally the BASF Diamont Inferno Orange with Switchblade Silver Metalic paint stripes was applied. The wheels are Centerline Convo ET, 15×4 in front and 15×14 in the rear.

The results of all his hard work produced a gorgeous, fast 1969 Camaro RS Z-28 Pro Street race car he can certainly be proud of…. Ron says “Now I have my dream car, and I’m happy,”
